Train Schedule
AMTRAK and the MBTA Commuter Rail both have trains that run between Boston, MA and Providence, RI on the same tracks. However, a combined train schedule does not exist for passengers traveling this route. Through my Visual Communication for Information Design graduate course with Professor Thomas Starr, I created a hypothetical weekend train schedule that integrated information from these two providers. The schedule was designed in InDesign and is 8.5" wide when unfolded.
The accordion-folded schedule only includes design elements that draw attention to necessary information. I used color to distinguish between northbound and southbound routes. Only one color is used on each side. Along with the logotype, Saturday and Sunday train numbers are included on the front fold. The presence of a train number indicates that the train runs on that respective day.
Train stations are displayed vertically at the top of the timetable and colored with respect to the direction of the train. Shaded lines in the timetable indicate that the train is a MBTA train. This designation is indicated on the far right of the timetable, shown in the below right image.
