ABOUT Type Book
This book, titled "About Type and Information Design", is a product of my Visual Communication for Information Design graduate course with Professor Thomas Starr. Its purpose was to highlight all the design elements we covered in the course, including type, hierarchy, and grid. Created in InDesign, the book size is 5.5" x 7".
The contents of the book are the papers I wrote as reflections on our course readings, which I divided into chapters. On my Contents page, I included information on the course readings I was responding to.
The only color I used outside gray-scale is the magenta that graces the cover. Within the chapters, I use it to highlight headers.
Incorporating photos and captions was a part of the design problem we needed to solve. In order to differentiate caption placement and style, I placed them in the first column aligned with the photo they went with and represented them in an italicized serif typeface. Some images are my work, while others are from our readings, as shown below. At the beginning of new chapters, I included the date in which I wrote the paper.
The screenshot below shows my underlying column structure and baseline grid, set at 14pt. The body typeface is Helvetica Light and the caption typeface is Palatino Italic, both 8pt.
